Drivers’ hours: changes to fines for commercial drivers

Drivers’ hours: changes to fines for commercial drivers

Changes are coming regarding the fining of commercial drivers and the powers of DVSA Traffic Examiners

Rules to be changed so that drivers can be fined for the last 28 days worth of offences where they drive tired

According to the Government’s Vehicle Operators Licence pages, the law is soon to change with regard to the fining of Commercial Drivers. Rules will soon be changed so that lorry, bus and coach drivers can be fined for every time they are caught driving tired within the last 28 days.
Currently, the DVSA can only fine drivers for offences they commit on the day or ongoing offences such as tachograph record manipulation.

DVSA traffic examiners to get new powers to issue on-the-spot fines for up to 5 Driver Hours offences

If you are a professional driver and commit offences regarding your driving hours then you can be fined for offences within the last 28 days for up to 5 offences with on the spot fines by DVSA Traffic Officers.

It’s not just the United Kingdom. This includes elsewhere.

If the driver is not from the UK then they will have to pay immediately or risk the vehicle being immobilised until they do.

When is this change going to happen?

We currently don’t know an exact date for these changes but will let you know when we do. The GOV.UK website will also be updated. Click here for the link to the information we have currently.

Why is this change coming in to force?

Lorry, bus and coach drivers must take a 45-hour rest break at least every fortnight.

From 1 November 2017, DVSA will start to fine drivers up to £300 if they spend their full weekly rest break in their vehicle in places where it causes a problem. For example, if a lorry driver spends their full break in the cab of their lorry in a layby.

The DVSA will fine drivers who simply do not get enough rest. Drivers who have insufficient rest cause collisions as they can make mistakes. Driving tired is never acceptable.

The consequences of driving when tired

Crashes involving tired lorry drivers can be devastating. Almost a quarter of injuries in accidents involving lorries are fatal or serious.

About 40% of sleep-related accidents involve commercial vehicles.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), driving while tired may be responsible for:

  • 1 in 5 of all accidents
  • up to a quarter of serious and fatal crashes

The Key Benefits Of Passing Your LGV Lorry Licence

If you’re looking for some reasons to motivate you to pass your LGV lorry licence certification, then this guide has information you’re looking for.

Passing Your LGV Lorry Licence

Passing Your LGV Lorry Licence

In particular, we’re going to show you some of the key benefits of passing your LGV lorry licence – so by the time you’ve finished reading, you will fully understand why passing this test will be one of the smartest career decisions you’ve ever made. With this in mind, let’s get straight to it.

Benefit 1 – excellent employment prospects

Perhaps one of the main reasons why you will want to get an LGV lorry licence is because it will greatly enhance your opportunities for high-paying work.

Regardless of your previous driving experience, getting the appropriate certification to drive these larger lorries will go a long way towards improving your job prospects, and there’s always countless employers who are hungry and eager to hire fresh graduates of this certification programme.

It’s also worth noting that there is currently a huge shortage of LGV drivers in the UK ñ and this shortage is estimated to rise up to 150,000 by 2020. Ultimately, this means you’ll never be short of work once you have passed the training to become a qualified LGV driver.

Benefit 2 – career growth opportunities

Additionally, it’s safe to say that there is plenty of room for career growth once you become a qualified LGV driver. Once you have passed the certification programme and have acquired some experience, you can soon make a name for yourself as a top driver, who will then be given the opportunity to drive fragile loads and earn an even better salary.

Benefit 3 – a satisfying workday

Being an LGV driver often gets a bad rap in the mainstream world, but most drivers know how fulfilling the work can truly be.

Of course, most types of driving job can soon become monotonous after a while. But becoming an LGV driver means you’ll never be bored because you’ll be able to drive across the entire country, and experience far more job satisfaction than you’ll ever find from the office lifestyle.

Benefit 4 – excellent pay

While many traditional driving jobs aren’t known for the excellent pay, the LGV industry is certainly an exception to the rule.

In most cases, you can expect to earn around £500 a week, growing to £40,000 a year ñ which is certainly nothing to complain about, especially compared to alternative driving jobs which pay nowhere near as well.

Conclusion

Overall, it’s easy to see that taking the time to acquire an LGV lorry licence is going to be in your best interests if you’re aiming to improve your driving career prospects and earn more money.

What’s more, it’s worth learning from one of the best trainers in the country if you’re looking to really increase your employment opportunities – and that company is Train Drive.

With a fantastic reputation in the industry, and well regarded as one of the top trainers in the UK, you simply can’t go wrong by turning to Train Drive when you’re aiming to pass your LGV certification test on your first attempt.

Various Benefits Of Having An LGV Drivers Licence In The UK

Large Goods Vehicle drivers (aka LGV drivers) or Heavy Goods Vehicle drivers (HGV drivers) are in short supply in the UK.

traindrive-hgv-lorry

LGV Driver Training

A research study has found that almost 60% of the current LGV drivers are over the age of 45 whereas the percentage of HGV drivers under the age of 25 is just 2%.

Consequently, it is estimated that there is a current shortage of around 45,000 LGV drivers in the UK. This shortage is expected to reach up to 150,000 drivers by 2020. It has also been reported that 25% fewer people acquired new driver licenses in 2013 as compared to the year 2008.

While the demand for LGV drivers was always there, the economic recession meant that people did not feel the consequences of lack of fresh recruits in the industry. However, the shortage has finally caught up with the industry.

This shortage for qualified LGV drivers is so acute that it is estimated that there are nine vacancies for a lorry driver in Northamptonshire for every single qualified candidate. This problem is spread all across the country.

The logistics operators estimate that the average age of a current LGV driver in UK is 53 which is much higher than the national average. In simple terms, many people are going to retire in the coming few years whereas there are fewer young people to replace them.

Due to this shortage of drivers, it is also expected that the wages for the qualified lorry drivers may rise as the economy cannot function without lorry drivers taking goods from the factories and ports to the store shelves.

Another advantage of training as a LGV driver is that as the economy grows, there will be need for more lorry drivers as people will consume more goods that need to be supplied to the stores. Overall, career as a LGV driver seems full of promises and good wages.

The logistics sector is currently the fourth biggest employer in the UK. The economy cannot function without experienced lorry drivers and they are the driving force of the economy.

Benefits of Becoming a Lorry Driver

One of the biggest advantages of becoming a LGV driver is that you can be assured of employment once you clear the required tests and have a proper LGV drivers license. As mentioned in the beginning, experts estimate a shortage of around 150,000 LGV drivers by 2020 which means that you can have a successful career as an LGV driver in the future.

The unemployment rate in UK is high but the logistics sector is the only sector that promises growth in the future. As far as the wages are concerned, it depends a lot on the number of hours you work and who you work for. Estimates range from £500 per week to £40,000 annually.

There is a lot of room for growth when it comes to LGV drivers. There are constant challenges due to different terrain in various parts of the country. As their driving skills grow, drivers can carry more fragile loads that offer bigger salary.

The logistics sector is one industry where one does not get bored as is often the case with the monotony of an office lifestyle. The country depends on the logistic sector and nothing will work without qualified lorry drivers.

As far as becoming a lorry driver is concerned, there are a number of reputable training centres that can help you in clearing the required tests at an affordable cost. So, if you have been thinking of choosing a career, give a serious thought to working as an LGV driver and acquire an LGV drivers license.
